Flashback of our first year in Swedish Lapland

A year ago we (Alex, Dalila and our two daughters) moved to Swedish Lapland. We came to live here because of the beautiful nature, the outdoor life and of course to let our girls grow up with all this.

In the Netherlands we lived in an apartment without a garden and when you stepped out of the house you had only one meter till the road. What a difference it is!

When we bought the cabins (stugor) to rent out we looked for a house nearby too. We found this lovely villa where we live in now. Up on the hill with the forest just behind the house and a wonderful view.

When we bought our house we thought we had oceans of space in the sheds near the house, after one year that appears to be very different! With a big garden you need a lot of stuff, big stuff. A lawnmower to sit on is not a real luxury with 5000m2 gras to clip. A snowblower is also needed for the wintertime, and 40 m3 firewood has to go somewhere… The result after one year…… we need an extra barn!

Overall the first year was mainly time for renovating. The stugor where grey/white (or really dirty) and we painted them traditional Swedish red. The interior of the houses are becoming very nice too!

We are learning a lot about the seasons (we just spy on the neighbours). We now know that snowfall can be al lot, 5 mm of snowfall with -20C can result i a big pile of snow. Past winter Alex had to go out twice on one day to clear the driveway with the snowblower. But also that the sunshine can be very warm (25 degrees in the sun) even when there is still snow! That is really nice experience and we can recommend that to everyone!

We are learning the Swedish language and we are making friends. We work hard and we come short in time, but we love it here and we enjoy it every day!!
